Rowdy Old People

I went and saw John Prine last night. I wasn't surprised to be surrounded by people with a lot of gray hairs. I was surprised to be completely deafened by a 60 year old country/folk singer. And man was that crowd rowdy -- hooting and whistling almost constantly. Old Folks Gone Wild! He had a great lead guitarist, rockin' solos throughout.

The opening act, some guy named Chris Knight, was kind of incomprehensible, but sounded good. I'm pretty certain all his songs were about trailer parks though.

I don't often post, so why now? I've spoken to a couple people who'd never heard of John Prine. That's just wrong. He's written a lot of great songs, with clever lyrics and messages that are still true today (See: Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore). So if somehow you're in that (I hope) small group of people who haven't heard of John Prine. Search him out sometime.

This weekend wasn't like the last 40 or so...

...in that I spent most of it not-playing-wow. In place of any significant wow playing, I drank a lot of beer and played other, less social, video games with Will and The Pete. I continue to be happy that I'm not raiding anymore, but that's not why I felt I needed to post about my weekend. There was probably some other cool stuff that happened, but it doesn't stand out in my mind like the super-hero like abilities of the dude at the beer store. The Pete put his 12-pack of Winter Warmer (which is what whalers drink at Christmas) up on the counter, and Beerstore Man looked at it like he had X-ray vision and immediately tore open the top. "Ah ha!" he shouted, "They've shorted you a beer. Sometimes they fuck up like that, go grab another". Anyway, it was pretty much the coolest thing that happened all weekend, I mean, how could he have known?! We were all really impressed.

This is the coolest thing ever.

So, I'm not actually all that saavy, so there's a good chance everyone else knows about this already. If you do, I'm mad you didn't tell me.

But anyway, www.pandora.com is my favorite thing of the, I dunno, month, year, whatever.

I mean? I name a band and it just plays music I like? I've even found a couple new bands to check out. I think I like this method better than iTunes keeping track of what I buy, because it's way more accurate so far. I'm still waiting to see how bad the ads are on it, but I suppose the fact that I haven't heard one yet is telling. I'm not sure I even care, this is cool!

English is a boring language.

I was just reading about the @ symbol. Most people I know say 'at symbol' when speaking about it, which I feel is pretty dull.

This wikipedia article on the @ symbol has a big list of what people call it in other languages. The Dutch call it "little monkey tail", the French sometimes call it "snail". In Mandarin Chinese it's a "tiny mouse". Now I'm really bummed with my language and it's lack of animal-names for things. I think I'm going to adopt "monkey tail" as my new term of choice.

Habitation and Igneus Formations

I'm tired of living beneath a rock. You know, a couple weeks ago some people died in SB's town? I sure didn't. I read it in the paper a week later, showed it to Jen, and discovered that I'm the most woefully uninformed human being alive.

So, the last bastion of not-using-LJ-to-keep-up-on-my-friends has fallen. Well.... we'll see if I actually use it.
